Going the Full 90 for Fans vs Dementia
Dave Disley-Jones
My Story
For Fans vs Dementia, I planned a 90-mile walk from Birmingham to Tranmere Rovers' Prenton Park to raise funds for Dementia UK, which ended up being 125 miles!
The walk marked the first anniversary of losing our dad at the age of 85. Coming to terms with his growing dementia in those final years was a challenge familiar to many, particularly people with ageing parents. I want to help Dementia UK's work to support families in a similar situation.
During the course of a 90-minute match, 30 people in the UK will develop dementia. Over 944,000 people in the UK are affected by the condition - and if someone you love is living with dementia, you're living with it too.
I signed up to Fans vs Dementia to help make sure no-one faces dementia alone and aimed to walk at least 90 miles, over about eight days, to watch Tranmere's League Two home game v. Chesterfield on Saturday, 5 April. 90 miles for 90 minutes (plus 35 minutes added on for stoppages!)
Please donate whatever you can to support families living with dementia. Thank you.
About Dementia UK
Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Their Admiral Nurses provide life-changing care to families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. They help people with dementia stay independent for longer, and support the people caring for them so they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days. They have the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems, helping families take back control when they are struggling.
